Oxbow had a temporary shortage, it is not discontinued. As of Jan 22, 2024 it is back in stock at Chewy and Petco. Still out of stock at Petsmart.
Buy Oxbow ferret food at ChewyOxbow is one of the best quality kibbles that is a) marketed to ferrets and b) easily found at pet stores across the country.
While no kibble will ever be as healthy as a raw diet, realistically, most ferret owners are not going to feed raw, whether that's because of cost or availability. I appreciate Oxbow for offering a relatively healthy kibble that is easily accessible.
Carnivore Care is a premium recovery food for carnivores with poor nutritional status resulting from illness or surgery. This specially-formulated product contains beneficial omega fatty acids and easily digestible proteins derived from premium quality egg and poultry sources to support nutrient absorption and optimize energy levels. Carnivore Care is calorically-dense by design, requiring less volume intake to meet daily energy requirements.
Carnivore Care is a fully balanced diet, but I've listed it as a treat because it should typically only be used under a vet's guidance, for ferrets that are recovering from surgery, illness, starvation, etc. Very old ferrets with difficulty eating dry food can also eat Carnivore Care. It also doesn't fit in well with any of the scoring algorithms - it really just consists of eggs and chicken with supplements, and has no grains or starches, so it should score an A+
It's also worth noting that this is the only food with eggs as the primary ingredient. It has a very strong egg flavor and scent, which some ferrets absolutely love, and others will refuse to eat. If you're having difficulty getting your ferret to eat Carnivore Care, but you need a liquid diet for the reasons mentioned above, you can try blending a high quality canned food with water (2 parts food to 1 part water)
In general, ferrets should not eat a liquid-only diet for a long period of time, as it is very bad for their dental health.
Single Protein Source – Recommend mixing with another protein source for variety.
Middle Quality Meat – the meat ingredients are a mixture of pure and by-products.
Grain- and Starch-Free – Grains and starches are linked to insulinoma.
Pea-Free – Peas are linked to kidney and bladder stones.
No Fruits, Grains, Starches, or Vegetables
No Sugars or Carcinogens
